CHAPTER TWO
âWell, doctor? Is Mr. Lindsay fit?â
Watters and Dr. Musgrave stood on the platform outside the stationmasterâs office, with seagulls screaming from the neighbouring Victoria Dock. Musgrave was elderly, with wise eyes that had seen every kind of human suffering. He waited until a train rattled past before replying.
âMr. Lindsayâs as fit as a French fighting flea,â he said. âAs long as heâs careful. However, I recommend that he takes things easy for a few days.â
âWhat do you think happened?â Watters asked.
The doctor pursed his lips. âYouâre the detective, Watters. Your guess is as good as mine.â
âTry,â Watters said.
âIâd say the two gentlemen â if I can call them that â used some sort of drug to knock Mr. Lindsay out.â
âI only smelled ordinary tobacco smoke,â Watters said.
âI doubt tobacco smoke, however powerful, could have that effect,â the doctor said dryly. âIâve never seen the like before, Watters, and thatâs a fact. I canât think what they used.â
âChloroform, perhaps?â Watters speculated.
The doctor shook his head. âChloroform leaves a distinctive aroma. Did you smell anything strange in the compartment?â
âNot a thing except strong tobacco,â Watters admitted. âMaybe opium?â
âIf the gentlemen had smoked opium,â the doctor said. âThey would have been more affected than Mr. Lindsay. No, Inspector Watters, Iâm afraid there is no easy answer to this mystery. Youâll have to find the thieves, and then youâll solve the mystery.â
âMaybe they struck Lindsay with a blackjack, and heâs lost the memory?â Watters suggested.
âI checked him for bruises, cuts, abrasions, broken bones, and every single blessed thing I could think of,â Dr. Musgrave said. âI found nothing at all. Mr. Lindsay is as fit as you or me; probably fitter than me.â He gave a wry smile. âAs I said, I told him to take it easy for a couple of days.â
âThank you, Doctor,â Watters said.
Duff stepped to Watters and saluted. âIâve given the telegrams to the telegraphist to send, sir, and Iâve spoken to the station staff here at Dundee East. Constable Logan is looking after the men who worked on the train.â
âAnything to report?â
âNothing, sir. Nobody I spoke to saw the two gentlemen.â Duff hesitated. âIâve asked Peter Grey to wait after his shiftâs finished, sir. I know youâll want to speak to him yourself. Heâs the porter who woke Mr. Lindsay.â
Watters nodded. âYou can support me in here, Duff.â
âYes, sir.â Duff nodded to Musgrave. âGood morning, Doctor.â
âGood morning, Duff. Sergeant Duff, now, I hear. Congratulations on your promotion.â
âThank you, Doctor.â Duff looked embarrassed at the attention.
âHowâs your lady wife?â
âRosemaryâs fine, thank you, Doctor.â Duff smiled, flushed, and looked at Watters for assistance.
âWeâll have to get on, Doctor, ...
